Yes, costly, but no rot and boat should have less problem getting off/on. The only thing I worry about then, is the durability and strength and whether it"ll hold up to UV effects over long term and making sure it doesn"t develop stress cracks or worse. I would love to find somone who"s used this on a pontoon application and give us their personal opinion (void of any sales pitches by vendors)

I just purchased a new trailer with plastic slides. The dealer told me that these were perferred because the carpet will hold salt water against the aluminum pontoons causing corrosion. My boat is fiberglass so it doesn't really matter for me but it does make it easier to launch with the plastic/vinyl bunk covers.

I installed the screw-on bunk glides on the trailer for my hard-to-load Baja sport boat. She slid off teh trailer so easy I had to make sure I tied it down on the ramp! i often used a ramp that had pretty low water at low tide, but the boad slid onto teh railer so well i could pull it up by hand - forget power loading or the winch!
I use a scissors trailer now so the glides would not be of use.

My trailer came with the glides already installed over top of treated lumber. They work great & as yet I've not had any problems with them. I DO have to be careful backing down the ramp once they get in the water as they become very slick in a hurry. Makes it great to load the pontoon when I'm ready to go home. I really like them. Mine had the center guides already installed too. Best thing I could have got besides the bunk glides.

I'm not sure about this but I would think one could go to any of the "big box stores" & buy the PVC trim boards that are used instead of wood trim that would work for bunk glides. I know for a fact that AZEK like Robbie used (as did I) to build the console that WCD had on his pontoon that I now have is some pretty good stuff IMO. It can be worked with just like any piece of lumber & is easy to work with & keep clean. I know it comes in 3/4" thickness & I'm sure one could get it in 1/2" thickness too & most of what I've seen is generally around 5-51/2" wide. I've seem them at Lowe's up to 16ft long X 3/4". I would think these would work very well for bunk glides & would last a long time. Just my 2cents for what's it worth. With today's money value that might not be worth very much.
![]() I still have enough left over from my rebuild that I could cut some of it up & put it on my bass boat trailer & see how it works. "IF" this heat & high humidity ever decides to ease up around here long enough to get it done. I think that's a good idea to try out & I'm sure it would be cheaper then buying the ones I see online. |

Les that material isn't structurally strong, it wouldn't support the boat as it would sag between the supports. When used in deck construction it requires floor joist that are spaced closer together than is require for wood.

It sounds to me like Les is saying to use it on top of the regular bunk boards as "slicks", not in place of.

Yes that is exactly what I am saying. My bunk glides are nailed to the sides of the 2X6s that came from the factory. I would certainly think the PVC lumber if screw down to the wood bunk boards would be plenty strong . You could recess the mounting holes & run lag screws or better yet stainless steel screws & fasten them to the boards underneath. I think that would work pretty well myself but I'm not an engineer so I really don't know. I would think being it's 3/4" thick it would take a long time to wear out.

The PVC trim boards I've bought from Lowe's for my house have a "textured" side & a smooth side so I think the smooth side would work pretty good. One could always apply a good coat of WAX to make the boat slide better if they wanted too.

Yes, the wood would support it and I would think it would be more slippery than bare wood or carpeted wood, but not as slick as the low molecular (or whatever it is called) slide strips made expecially for that purpose. Certainly an idea worth considering -- let us know how it works out.

I think what I will do is get a 3/4X4 trim board & fasten them down on the bunks on my bass boat trailer & just see how they work out. My bunks are only 10ft long so all I need to do is cut one down the middle & drill holes to mount it. I'll let you know how they work out. ANOTHER PROJECT coming up. I KNEW I could come up with something else to keep me busy other then cutting grass.

i have a question on this. my boat is 24' I plan on using 18' foot bunks, is that long enough? that's the longest 2x's i can get without having to splice. if i use slicks on top of the bunks how long should they be? wouldn't i just need them toward the front since the back will be in the water anyway? and Les how much are those 16ft long X 3/4" boards? i priced the slicks and depending on what length i need they are probably going to out of my budget untill next year.

Measure how much of your toon actually rests on the boards, and that'll answer your question

well the boat i believe stayed in the water all the time and when it was pulled out looks like somebody just threw some spliced, warped and un-carpeted boards on the trailer. that stretched about 22 feet. the brackets are spaced out 18 foot. the floor section is 20 foot.

PM sent to you @ 3:06 AM I'll get a price on the boards today you are asking about as right now off the the top of my head I don't remember. Cheaper then buying the bunk slicks for sure I would think but will let you know in another PM.

The carpet on my bunks is not in the best of shape, close to needing replaced. Why do I need carpet? It looks like the carpet would hold moisture and help rot the wood. Can I go with something like these plastic strips and remove the carpet all together?
