i have had two pontoons in the past. lookiong for something now and found a deck boat with a 125hp force motor. the foot on the force needs to be replaced. the boat needs complete rebuild. bottom and trailer is good .$2000. what is your thoughts on this as a boat to buy and rebuild ?

I believe a deck boat can go faster then a pontoon.

That’s about as cheap as you can get for a usable boat, motor, trailer.

You are asking if it’s a good idea but only you know if you have the skill, motivation and bucks to put into a project.

I have only rented a deck boat. I will tell you they don’t ride well on choppy water. They don’t turn great. Not as stable as a pontoon. If you want versatility and compromise is ok then that boat will do a little of everything. Much faster than a 125 on any type of pontoon. However total weight capacity will be lower than a comparable length pontoon. If you are handy enough to keep an old 2 stroke well maintained and have a careful ear for trouble you can’t really go wrong.

I find my $1500 28’ pontoon that required quite a bit of tinkering on the motor and massive straightening of bent railings and patching some holes in tubes to be quite the bargain. I now have a great sound system, a brand new Bennington elliptical center tube and a great running v6 old 2 stroke. My carpet is good and biminis and vinyl looks great. I have less than $5k in it. It’s worth double that. So the value is there if you have the skill.
